Facebook is putting drag queens in danger by forcing them to use their “real names”

Facebook should read up on its queer history: You never want to mess with drag queens.

Claiming the use of legal names will “keep our community safe,” Facebook has begun shutting down the profiles of individuals who do not to use their “real” or legal names when creating and logging into their accounts. The new requirement is drawing the ire of many in the LGBT community who argue it is a policing tactic that could be harmful to both artistic and queer communities.

How you can join the fight against Facebook

I changed my name on Facebook about a month ago, if not a little longer, in support of the above, to something very unlike an actual name (it’s a three word statement about being decent). I then made a number of posts about the change; why I had done so, why other people should, the ridiculousness of Fb’s claims that it keeps people safe. I also made some posts saying “come get me Facebook, this isn’t my real name”. So far, I’ve not heard a peep. So much for their algorithm picking stuff up. The fact that I’ve not been contacted yet, even with all my attention seeking posts about the name change, shows that it’s targeted bullying. I know a number of people who use fake names and novelty names on Fb and they’ve never been made to change them.

In order to keep people safe Facebook absolutely should be promoting the use of persona identities for people who could be targets.

  • Do not forget Michael Brown
  • Do not forget how the media dehumanized him and tried to justify his murder
  • Do not forget how peaceful protests were painted as savage riots
  • Do not forget police armed with military grade weapons terrorized and arrested black civilians
  • Do not forget Darren Wilson being awarded over $400,000 in fundraiser donations for murdering an unarmed black child
  • Do not forget that this system was not built to defend us, but to control us
  • Do not forget Ferguson

It’s nothing personal, but Dallas County judge Tonya Parker does not perform wedding ceremonies for heterosexual couples looking to tie the knot. What is her reason? The state of Texas, along with 30 other states, does not currently allow same-sex marriage. Despite recent victories in places like Oregon and Pennsylvania, many states are still in court over the issue leading this openly gay judge to politely turn away couples until marriage is equal.

In an interview with the Dallas Voice, Parker said ,“I’m sorry. I don’t perform marriage ceremonies because we are in a state that does not have marriage equality, and until it does, I am not going to partially apply the law to one group of people that doesn’t apply to another group of people.”

While some are outraged, many applaud Parker, pointing out that same-sex couples have been denied marriages for years and that this is just an ironic dose of how homosexuals are treated.
